What is a vaginal hysterectomy?

A vaginal hysterectomy is a minimally-invasive surgical technique to remove your uterus without any abdominal scarring whatsoever.

During a vaginal hysterectomy, Dr. Payne begins by making an incision inside the vagina to access the uterus. She clamps your uterine blood vessels and carefully separates your uterus from the ovaries, fallopian tubes, upper vagina, then the connective tissue, before removing the uterus through the vagina.

Who is a good candidate for a vaginal hysterectomy?

Vaginal hysterectomies can treat a variety of gynecological conditions, depending on a variety of individual factors. Such conditions include:

  • Uterine fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Adenomyosis
  • Gynecological cancer
  • Uterine and/or pelvic organ prolapse
  • Pelvic floor laxity

Dr. Payne assesses vaginal hysterectomy candidates based on a wide range of factors. However, in general, good candidates have had at least one prior vaginal birth and may have pelvic organ prolapse or pelvic floor laxity.

Vaginal hysterectomies may also benefit some patients with fibroids and enlarged uteruses, depending on their size.

What are the benefits of a vaginal hysterectomy?

Vaginal hysterectomies offer many benefits that make them an incredibly appealing option.

These include:

Minimally invasive-  A vaginal hysterectomy is the least invasive type of hysterectomy        because Dr. Payne removes the uterus through an incision in the vagina.

No abdominal scarring – Unlike other hysterectomy procedures, vaginal hysterectomies leave behind no abdominal incisions whatsoever.

Less pain – Vaginal hysterectomies cause less pain than other types of hysterectomies.

Fast recovery rate – Because it is so minimally invasive, the vaginal hysterectomy is also associated with more rapid recovery times and a quicker subsequent return to work.

Vaginal hysterectomies also have lower associated costs and pose a lower risk of complications than other hysterectomy methods. When possible, this is the preferred hysterectomy method, though not everyone will qualify for this procedure. Dr. Payne works with you to find the correct and safest fit when that is the case.
