Which unique cancers do women need cancer screening for?

There are four types of gynecological cancer unique to women and folks assigned female at birth, including:

Cervical cancer

Cervical cancer develops in the cells of the cervix, located in the lower part of the uterus. Thanks to vaccines and regular early screenings, cervical cancer is one of the least common types of gynecological cancer present in the United States.

Endometrial cancer

Endometrial cancer grows in the lining of the uterus, called the endometrium. When caught early, it has excellent recovery rates. Regular screenings can help detect cell changes before they display early symptoms like abnormal bleeding.

Ovarian cancer

Ovarian cancer is both rare and deadly. It most often appears when women are in their 50s, but you can develop it before age 35.

Because ovarian cancer mimics the symptoms of lesser conditions, like irritable bowel syndrome, many people don’t discover it until it has reached an advanced stage. However, it has about a 95% recovery rate when caught early.

Vulvar cancer

Vulvar cancer is cancer of the labia. This rare cancer usually appears in women in their 70s and 80s.

Why are Pap smears an important element of cancer screening?

A Pap smear is a quick procedure during which Dr. Payne gently scrapes or brushes a collection of cells from your cervix. She examines them under a microscope, looking for any cell abnormalities or changes that may indicate the development of precancerous cells.

When performed regularly, Pap smears are extremely effective at early detection of cervical cancer.

Why do women need breast exams as part of cancer screening?

During a breast exam, Dr. Payne lightly palpates the skin of the breast, nipple, and underarm to check for lumps, bumps, or anything else abnormal. She also visually checks the shape and size and your skin texture. This simple exam can save your life.

How often you receive breast exams depends on your age. Between 25 and 39, gynecologists recommend you schedule a breast exam every one to three years. Once you turn 40, you may get a breast exam every one to two years.

Gynecologists recommend that individuals aged 50 and up schedule a yearly breast exam.
